Deeply incensed by the terrorist attack on the United States 11 September 2001, and disgusted by the Abu Ghraib prison scandal, Don Bordenkircher decided to seek a way to contribute his knowledge to the war effort in Iraq. An honorable discharge from the US Navy at 22, upwards of 40 years in national/ international corrections/law enforcement, and a decade of teaching, he retired in 2003 and volunteered to assist his country. As Chair & Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice at a small West Virginia university, after the attack in New York, he began to see many of his students, who were also members of the National Guard, activated for the battlefield. One of his top students died in the line of duty & his only grandson, a member of a National Guard unit not deployed in 50 years, was called up as well. This emotional toll further prodded Don to become involved in the war effort. He offered his services as a civilian contractor to the Iraqi Corrections Services, was accepted, and straightforwardly joined the ranks of 70+ colleagues advising the Iraqi prisons program. At age 70, at least 20 years older than most of his coworkers in Iraq, he was pleased to have them call him Pappy. Pappy’s rendition of his mission, his perception of involvement in, and the end product of the United States “Correction-Detention Program” in Iraq, deserves to be told.
